The Shan are a people of eastern Burma, closely related in language to the Thai and the Lao, and the name is the Burmese version of a word that neighbors across the region used for the same group of peoples. Siam, the old name of Thailand, is another version of it, and so is the Assam of north-eastern India. All three are exonyms, names given by outsiders rather than chosen, and all three trace back to one word whose own origin is argued over. It is a useful reminder that a great many national names on the map were assigned by somebody standing outside the border.
