Where it comes from

Our story of Shandy

Tristram Shandy sets out to tell the story of a man's life and never gets him born; the narrator keeps interrupting himself with digressions about his father's theories, his uncle's military hobby, and the circumstances of his own conception. It contains a completely black page mourning a character, a blank page where the reader is invited to draw a woman, a marbled page, a missing chapter, squiggly lines diagramming the plot, and a sermon. It was a bestseller. Nearly every device that twentieth-century experimental fiction was praised for inventing is in it, two hundred years early, in a book its author wrote to amuse himself while dying of tuberculosis.

Shandy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1981, with 44 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Shandy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight by everybody.
  • Six letters and two syllables: quick to write and easy to learn.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
What to consider
  • In Britain and much of the Commonwealth it is primarily a drink, which will be mentioned.
  • Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either may be taken for the other.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has three candidates and no answer.
