Where it comes from

Our story of Shandon

Saint Anne's in Shandon has a tower built of two kinds of stone on two sides each, red sandstone and pale limestone, so it changes color depending on which street you look from. It has eight bells, a clock with four faces that famously disagree with each other, and a fish weathervane on top. Visitors climb the tower and are allowed to ring the bells themselves, with printed sheets of tunes to follow, which means that the sound over that part of the city is produced all day by tourists of no musical training. It is one of the more generous decisions any institution has made about its own noise.

Not established

The Cork place name comes from Irish words for an old fort, and that derivation is reasonably secure. Whether an American Shandon comes from the place or is a build on a free front and ending is not recorded.

Shandon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 58 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Shandon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Shan and Don are both available as short forms and both work on their own.
  • It is read correctly at first sight and never needs spelling twice.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
  • Shandon, Shannon and Sheldon are close enough to be confused in speech.
  • No origin is documented for the first name, so the meaning question has two candidates and no answer.
