Where it comes from

Our story of Shanan

Shenanigan turns up in California in the middle of the nineteenth century, fully formed, and nobody has established where it came from. An Irish derivation is the one most often repeated and is not supported by the Irish evidence. A Spanish origin has been proposed, and a German one. The Oxford English Dictionary records it as of unknown origin and has not budged. That is more common than people assume: a good many everyday English words have no agreed etymology at all, and confident answers in circulation are usually somebody's plausible guess that got repeated until it sounded official.

Shanan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1970, with 53 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Shanan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Shan and Nan are both available as short forms and both work on their own.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either may be taken for the other.
  • Shannon and Shanon are both commoner, so the name will be heard as one of them.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
