Where it comes from

Our story of Shamyra

Palmyra was an oasis on the caravan route between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf, rich on transit trade, with its own dialect, its own gods and a colonnaded main street a kilometer long. In the third century its queen, Zenobia, took advantage of Roman weakness and annexed Egypt and most of Asia Minor, ruling a third of the empire for a few years before the emperor Aurelian defeated her and, by most accounts, paraded her in gold chains and then let her retire to a villa in Italy. The city never recovered. A great deal of what survived until recently was destroyed within the last decade, which is worth saying plainly about a place so often described as timeless.

Shamyra sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Shamyra sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Myra comes off the back of it as a short form and is established in its own right.
  • Three syllables with a strong middle stress carry well and are easy to remember.
  • It is distinctive on a page without containing a difficult sound.
What to consider
  • Two readings of the middle vowel are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • Shamira, Samira and Shamyrah are all in the record and will be confused with it.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
