Shaley is a light front syllable and a very productive ending, and the English word it accidentally spells has nothing to do with it. English is good at producing this kind of accident, and it has a whole family of words made the same way.

Where it comes from

Our story of Shaley

English builds words by saying something twice with a vowel changed, and several of them started as real sentences. To shilly-shally is to say shall I, shall I — hesitating aloud, with the question repeated — and the phrase appears in that longer form in seventeenth-century writing before it wore down. Willy-nilly is will he, nill he: whether he wants to or not, using a negative verb English has otherwise lost. Dilly-dally, riff-raff, flip-flop, zigzag and tittle-tattle are built on the same pattern without the sentences behind them, and the rule for the vowel order is surprisingly rigid — the high vowel always comes first, which is why nobody says shally-shilly or zagzig, and why a big bad wolf cannot be a bad big one. Nobody is taught this. Everybody follows it.

Shaley sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 41 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Shaley sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
  • Front stress on two syllables is easy and quick.
What to consider
  • Shayley, Shailey and Shaleigh are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • It is also an ordinary English adjective about rock, which readers will notice.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
