The story of Severo
The cognomen began as a personal nickname and became hereditary, which means Roman families carried descriptions of a long-dead ancestor's appearance or character for centuries without embarrassment. Cicero's family was named for a chickpea, possibly from a wart, and he was advised early on to drop it and refused. Ovid was Naso, the nose; Crassus was thick or fat; Balbus stammered; Caecus was blind; Brutus meant dull or heavy. Severus, stern, was among the more dignified, and it was carried by the emperor who came from Leptis Magna in North Africa, ruled from 193 to 211 and died at York while campaigning in Britain. Spanish and Italian kept the name through several saints, and it reached the American records with immigration.
