Our story of Sephora
Ours, offered as ours. The Septuagint — the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible made in Alexandria from the third century BC — is the reason so many biblical names reach English in Greek shapes rather than Hebrew ones. Tzipporah becomes Sepphora, Moshe becomes Moyses, Yeshua becomes Iesous. Western Christianity inherited the Greek forms and the Hebrew ones only came back through Protestant translation. Sephora is the Greek half of that split.
Meaning
bird
From Hebrew tzippor, a bird; the Septuagint rendered the name Sepphora, which gives the Greek and Latin form Sephora used in Catholic and Orthodox tradition.

About 1 girl in 30,909 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 51,847 for Sephora itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jalene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sephora's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jalene climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jalene's path sketches the road Sephora is walking now.
Sephora sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that is concrete and easy to explain to a child.
- Ora is a complete short form in its own right.
- A documented biblical figure with a genuinely striking scene behind her.
- A large cosmetics retailer carries the name, which is a strong association.
- Zipporah is the standard English biblical spelling.
- Seven letters and three syllables is a fair amount for early handwriting.
