The story of Selwyn
Beowulf is largely a poem about a building. Heorot is Hrothgar's hall, and the horror of Grendel is that he takes possession of it at night, which is a social catastrophe rather than merely a violent one: the hall is where the lord distributes rings and food, where men sleep together, where oaths are sworn and where the poet sings. Old English poetry is full of the fear of losing it, and the great elegy known as The Wanderer describes a man who has no hall left to go to. Naming used the word accordingly, giving Selwyn, a hall-friend, and the compounds behind Shelton and Selby. The Old English world had almost no other public architecture, and the vocabulary shows what that meant.
