Saydie
Feminine · “a chief”
Sadie Hawkins was a character in a comic strip. Her father, despairing of marrying her off, declared a day on which the unmarried women of the town could chase the men, and by the 1940s American schools were holding actual Sadie Hawkins dances. A cartoon invented a social custom, and the custom outlived the strip.

Where it comes from
From sarah to Saydie
The story of Saydie
Sarah's meaning is plainer and harder than the usual gloss. Sar is a Hebrew word for an official, a captain, a person set over others, and sarah is its feminine — a woman in charge, not a girl in a story. English pet forms then took it a long way from there: Sarah gives Sally by the old habit of swapping r for l, and Sadie by the equally old habit of swapping r for d, the same machinery that made Molly out of Mary and Hal out of Harry. Sadie then acquired a comic strip, a day named after it and several thousand school dances. Saydie writes the vowel out, which is the one thing the spelling does.
Meaning
a chief, a noblewoman
Sadie is a pet form of Sarah, Hebrew sarah, the feminine of sar — an officer, a chief, someone with authority. It is a job description rather than a decoration, which is worth knowing, because princess, the word usually printed, softens it considerably.

The Samar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Saydie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Samar climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Samar's path sketches the road Saydie is walking now.

The trade-off
- The name behind it has a documented Hebrew meaning that is concrete rather than decorative.
- Two syllables that everyone says correctly on first sight.
- Sarah is available as a formal version, which pet-form names usually are not.
- Sadie is far commoner and this spelling will be corrected toward it every time.
- The ay adds a letter and no sound, so the whole cost of it is paid for appearance.
- It is a pet form used as a full name, which reads as informal on paper.
