Savilla
Feminine
Savilla sits between two words with nothing to do with each other. Sevilla is a Spanish city whose name has passed through Phoenician, Latin and Arabic. Sibylla was a prophetess — the Greeks had several, and Christian writers kept them on as pagan witnesses. Both were available to nineteenth-century American families, and neither can be shown for this spelling.

The story of Savilla
The sibyls were prophetic women attached to particular shrines — Cumae, Delphi, Erythrae — and medieval Christianity absorbed them as figures who had unknowingly foretold Christ, which is why they appear on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel beside the prophets. The name Sibyl was used in England from the Middle Ages. Savilla appears in American records from 1882 and peaked immediately, which places it among the nineteenth-century names that arrived through family transmission rather than through fashion, and among the Pennsylvania German communities in particular.

Not established
If the name comes from Sibylla, it names the prophetesses of the ancient world, whose own title has no established derivation. If it comes from Sevilla, it names a city called Hispalis by the Romans and Ishbiliya by the Arabs, and the modern name is what four centuries of Arabic did to the Latin. Neither reading can be assigned to a particular family.

The trade-off
- Both possible origins are substantial — a city and a class of prophetess.
- Three open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
- It is genuinely rare, so a child will not meet another.
- It belongs firmly to the nineteenth century and carries that flavor everywhere.
- Its meaning cannot be given, since two unrelated words meet at the spelling.
- Savilla, Sevilla and Sibylla all appear in old records and will be confused.
