The story of Saud
Muhammad ibn Saud, the ruler of a small oasis town in the Nejd, made an alliance in 1744 with the religious reformer Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab; the state that grew from it eventually became the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, proclaimed in 1932 and named for the family — Al Saud, the house of Saud. No other country carries a family's name in that way. The personal name is used across the Arabian peninsula and beyond, and American records show it in small numbers rising with Gulf and wider Arab migration.
Meaning
good fortunes; happy occasions
From the Arabic root s-'-d, the same one behind Said, Saida and Su'ad, carrying senses of good fortune, happiness and auspiciousness. Sa'd is the singular and Su'ud or Sa'ud the plural, so the name pluralises good luck. The star name Sa'd al-Su'ud, 'luck of lucks', is an Arabic name for a star in Aquarius and appears on star charts as Sadalsuud. The derivation is settled.
