The story of Satori
Zen distinguishes between what is worked out and what is seen, and satori is the word for the second, used in the teaching literature for centuries. The word reached English readers in the nineteen-fifties and sixties through translations and through American writers who took up Zen, and it entered ordinary English vocabulary along with koan and zazen. Using it as a given name is a western practice rather than a Japanese one; in Japan the name Satori exists but reads differently.
Meaning
awakening; sudden comprehension
Japanese satori, from satoru, to know or to understand. In Zen it names the flash of insight into one's own nature, distinguished from the gradual understanding that comes from study.

The Dalana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Satori's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dalana climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dalana's path sketches the road Satori is walking now.
Satori sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
