Santino
Masculine · “little saint”
Santino is the Italian affectionate form of Santo, and it carries the Latin word for holy — sanctus — straight into a modern classroom. Three even syllables, all open vowels, with the stress landing on that long TEE in the middle. It has been on American records since well before the Second World War, mostly through Italian families, and has picked up new life in Spanish-speaking households as well.

The story of Santino
The root is the Latin sanctus, "holy," which became santo in Italian and Spanish and attached itself to saints' days, place names and churches across the Catholic world. Italians turned Santo into Santino with the -ino suffix that also gives Marco a Marcolino and a bambino a name of its own. Italian emigration carried it to the Americas in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which is why it shows up early in US records and why it remains strongest in the states where those families settled. Mario Puzo gave it to Santino "Sonny" Corleone in The Godfather in 1969, fixing the name and its short form in the American ear; more recently it has grown through Spanish-speaking families, especially in Argentina, where it became a genuine favorite.

The Keaton test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Santino's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Keaton climbed just as high around 2000, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Keaton's path sketches the road Santino is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled exactly as it sounds in English, Spanish and Italian alike, so it survives phone calls, roll calls and border crossings intact.
- Several short forms already in real use — Sonny, Santi, Tino — none of which need to be invented.
- A documented line back to Latin sanctus, and an unbroken presence in American records stretching over a century.
- At home in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese-speaking families, which makes it travel across a mixed extended family without translation.
- The Godfather link is strong and permanent: Santino Corleone is the hot-tempered eldest son, and some adults will make the connection out loud, usually fondly. Children generally will not.
- Its recent rise means most people carrying the name are still young, so a Santino may be the only one in his year while also sounding current rather than antique.
- It is heard far more in some parts of the country than others, so how familiar it feels will depend a good deal on where the family lives.
- "Little saint" is a meaning that invites the occasional joke from relatives with a sense of humor. It passes.
