Where it comes from

Our story of Sandria

The lighthouse at Alexandria stood on an island called Pharos, and the island's name became the word for the building. Italian faro, Spanish faro, French phare, Portuguese farol, Greek faros: every one of them is that island. The tower itself stood for something like a millennium and a half, survived several earthquakes, and was finally knocked down by one in the fourteenth century; blocks from it were used to build a fort that still stands on the site, and divers have brought up masonry from the harbor floor. English is the odd one out, having built its own word out of light and house, which is why an English speaker meeting the Romance word never guesses that it is a place.

Sandria sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1947, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sandria sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both cuts produce short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Seven letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
  • It is genuinely rare while being built from familiar sounds.
What to consider
  • Sandra, Sondria and Saundria will all be written for it.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Nothing records which of the two sources applies.
