Where it comes from

The story of Sandhya

In the Vedic tradition the sandhyas are the joints of the day, and Sandhyavandana, 'worship at the junctions,' is the daily rite said at them, built around the Gayatri mantra. The word also entered scholarship in a stranger way. When the Charyapada, Buddhist mystic songs among the oldest writing in the languages of eastern India, were first published, their editor described their language as sandhya-bhasha, 'twilight language,' speech with a hidden second sense; later scholars argued the word should be read sandha, 'intended.' Sandhya is a familiar girls' name in India and came to the United States with Indian families.

Meaning

twilight; the junction of day and night (Sanskrit)

Sandhya sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 24 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sandhya sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A clear meaning: the junction of day and night.
  • Tied to one of the oldest daily rites in Hindu practice.
  • Spelled as it is said once the dh is known.
What to consider
  • English speakers tend to say SAND-ee-uh, with the a of cat and an extra syllable, so the family will need to give the sound.
  • The breathy dh has no English equivalent, so the name will usually be simplified outside Indian communities.
