During the War of 1812 a meatpacker in Troy, New York, called Samuel Wilson supplied barrels of beef to the army stamped 'U.S.', and according to the story that was later made official, soldiers joked that the letters stood for Uncle Sam, meaning Wilson; Congress recognized him as the original of the figure in 1961. In India in 1858 the British cavalry officer Sam Browne lost his left arm, and to carry his sword one-handed he designed a belt with a strap over the shoulder that armies around the world adopted. In the American record Samie is mostly a boy's name; a girl called Samie usually carries it as a short form of Samantha.
