The story of Salvator
Two paintings carry the name into places it would not otherwise go. The first is a person: Salvator Rosa, a Neapolitan who painted landscapes full of broken trees, bandits and storms at a time when everyone else was painting calm ones, and who was rediscovered a century later by English travelers looking for scenery that was frightening rather than pretty. The word picturesque was worked out partly by arguing about his pictures. The second is a title: Salvator Mundi, savior of the world, the name of a type of image showing Christ with a raised hand and a glass orb — and of one particular version, sold in the last decade for more money than any painting has ever fetched, whose attribution has been argued over ever since.
Meaning
Savior
The Latin word means one who saves, and it was used of Christ. Italian and Spanish both take the word directly as a name, which is a practice English has never been comfortable with: Salvatore and Salvador are ordinary names, and English has no equivalent at all.

Fashion outlook
Salvator sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is plain, ancient and entirely unhedged.
- Sal is a short, warm form that has been in American use for a century.
- It connects directly to Italian and Spanish families of the same name.
- Salvatore and Salvador are both far more familiar, and this form will be lengthened by people who assume it is incomplete.
- The name states a religious claim, which is not optional and not everyone's.
- Three syllables in a country that prefers one means the short form will do the work.
