English has two words spelled sallow and they are not related. One is a tree: the sallow is a broad-leaved willow, from an Old English word with relatives across the Germanic languages and a Latin cousin in salix, and it is the willow whose catkins are called pussy willow. The other is a complexion — yellowish, unhealthy-looking — from a completely separate Old English adjective about a dull color. They fell together in spelling and have stayed there, so that a sentence about a sallow by a stream and a sentence about a sallow face contain different words. The tree matters more than it looks: sallow catkins are one of the earliest major nectar sources of the year, and several moth species eat nothing else.
