Ruthy
Feminine
There was an English word ruth, meaning pity or compassion, and it died. What survived is the hole it left: ruthless, an adjective for the absence of a thing English can no longer name. The Hebrew name is unrelated and much older, and the coincidence is one of the neatest in the language.

The story of Ruthy
The Book of Ruth is four chapters long and almost entirely about ordinary loyalty. A Moabite widow refuses to leave her Israelite mother-in-law, follows her to a country that has no obligation to either of them, gleans in the fields for food, and ends up the great-grandmother of David. It is read at Shavuot, and its central line — where you go I will go, your people will be my people — is quoted at weddings by people who have not noticed it is said by a daughter-in-law. The English word that sounds the same came from somewhere else entirely: Old Norse and Old English had a noun for pity that English used for six hundred years and then dropped, keeping only ruthless.

Not established
Hebrew Rut has no settled meaning. A connection with reut, friendship or companionship, is the usual proposal and fits the story well enough to be suspected of coming from it. The English word ruth, meaning pity, is Germanic and has no relationship to the name at all; the resemblance is accidental.

The Willadene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ruthy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Willadene climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Willadene's path sketches the road Ruthy is walking now.
