The story of Royalty
Regalis described anything belonging to a king, and English took roialte in the fourteenth century for the condition and the persons. The modern sense of a royalty payment comes from the crown's ownership of minerals: money owed to the king for what was mined. Its use as a given name is recent and American, given to both sexes, and belongs with the status word-names of the last two decades.
Meaning
the state of being royal
From Old French roialte, from Latin regalis, kingly, built on rex; the sense of a payment to a rights-holder came much later and by way of the crown's mineral rights.

The Rodric test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Royalty's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rodric climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rodric's path sketches the road Royalty is walking now.
Royalty sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- An ordinary English word, so nobody has to be taught to say or spell it.
- Roy and Royal are both complete names and ready short forms.
- The Latin root behind it is genuinely one of the oldest in Europe.
- It names a station the child does not hold, and strangers will remark on it.
- It is used for both sexes, so forms may guess wrong.
- The second meaning of the word is a payment, which some will mention.
