The story of Rosilyn
Rosalyn and its spellings, Roslyn, Rosalynn and Rosilyn among them, spread in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. Rosalyn Yalow, a physicist from the Bronx, developed with Solomon Berson the radioimmunoassay, a way of measuring tiny amounts of hormones in blood; she declined to patent it so that laboratories everywhere could use it, and in 1977 she received the Nobel Prize in medicine. Rosalynn Carter, as First Lady, sat in on Cabinet meetings and in 1979 testified before a Senate committee for better mental health care, the cause she kept working on for the rest of her life.
