Where it comes from

The story of Rosiland

Rosalind in As You Like It speaks more lines than any other woman Shakespeare wrote — around a quarter of the play — and she spends most of it disguised as a young man called Ganymede, at which point she is also pretending, for the benefit of the man she loves, to be a boy pretending to be Rosalind. On the original stage a boy actor was playing a woman playing a boy playing a woman, and the epilogue makes a joke of it directly. The part is a gift and a monster: she has to carry the comic engine, the love plot and the play's argument about whether any of the romantic language means anything. Actors describe it as one of the hardest roles in the comedies precisely because nothing happens to her; she makes everything happen.

Meaningscholars disagree

gentle horse, or soft horse

The Germanic original joins a word for a horse to one usually read as soft or gentle, and the rose is a later Spanish reinterpretation of a name that already existed. Which elements a particular medieval form contained is argued over, and the horse is the more secure half.

Fashion outlook

Rosiland sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
  • The literary association is a genuinely attractive one.
What to consider
  • Rosalind, Rosalyn and Roselyn are all commoner and will be written for it.
  • The changed vowel is inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • The rose reading is a later reinterpretation rather than the original meaning.
