Rosenda
Feminine · “famous path”
Rosenda has no rose in it. It is the feminine of Rosendo, which comes from the Germanic Rudesind — fame joined to a word for a path — and it survives in Galicia and almost nowhere else, because a tenth-century bishop there carried it and founded a monastery that kept his memory. The rose is a coincidence of spelling, three hundred years old and entirely convincing.

The story of Rosenda
Rudesindus was a Galician nobleman who became bishop of Mondoñedo, founded the monastery of Celanova, and was canonized two centuries later; his cult made the name a Galician one and it spread from there through Spain and to Latin America. The Germanic elements arrived in Iberia with the Suebi and Visigoths, and a handful of their names survived in the northwest long after they had vanished elsewhere. American records carry Rosenda from 1915, arriving with Spanish-speaking families, and it has always been rare here.

famous path
From the Germanic hrod, fame or glory, and sinths, a path or a journey — so something like one whose road is famous. The elements are secure; how they were meant together is less so. What is certain is that the rosa most Spanish speakers hear at the front is not there: the resemblance is accidental.

- Three open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
- It is a genuine Galician and Spanish name rather than a coinage.
- The Germanic origin is unexpected and makes a good line to be able to give.
- Everyone will assume there is a rose in it, and there is not.
- It belongs to an older generation and carries that flavor.
- Rosinda, Rosendo and Rosena all sit close by and will be written instead.
