Maggy

Greek margarites was borrowed from further east — the trail runs back through Persian toward an Indian source — and it reached Europe with the pearls themselves. Maggy is Margaret cut to two syllables, which is what English does to any name it uses constantly.

The story of Maggy
Margaret became one of the standard women's names of medieval Europe, carried by queens of Scotland, Denmark and Norway and by a saint whose cult was enormous. A name that common generates a great many short forms, and English produced an unusual number: Meg, Peg, Maggie, Margot, Daisy and Greta all come from it, and Peg is there because medieval English liked to make pet names by swapping the first consonant for a rhyming one. Maggy is the y-spelling of the commonest of them, and it appears in American records from the 1960s.
Meaning
pearl
From the Greek margarites, a pearl, itself borrowed from an eastern language — probably through Old Persian, and possibly from a Sanskrit word for a pearl or a flower bud. The word traveled with the trade, which is the usual way names of precious things move.

The Jimma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Line the two peaks up, and Jimma's path sketches the road Maggy is walking now.

The trade-off
- It is warm and short without being childish, which few diminutives manage.
- Margaret sits behind it as a formal option and is returning to fashion.
- The word behind it traveled from India to Greece to Europe, which is a good story in one line.
- Nobody in the English-speaking world has to be told how to say it.
- Maggie is far commoner and will be written instead on nearly everything.
- As a given name it reads as a nickname, and a woman will be asked what it is short for.
- It sits close to Maggie, Magi and Margie, which will all appear on mail.
