The story of Rosaria
The rosary developed in the medieval West as a way of counting prayers, and the word for it borrowed the imagery of a rose garland, which appears in devotional writing from the thirteenth century. Pope Pius V established the feast of the Holy Rosary after the Christian victory at Lepanto in 1571, and Italian and Spanish naming took the title up: Rosaria, Rosario and Del Rosario are all Marian names of that kind. Rosario is a man's name in Italy and Spain and a woman's in Latin America. Rosaria reached United States records with Italian migration and had its best year in 1916.
Meaning
of the rosary
Italian Rosaria, from rosario, the rosary, from Latin rosarium, a rose garden or a garland of roses. The devotion's name is a metaphor: each prayer is a rose offered to Mary. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was established after the battle of Lepanto in 1571, and the name honors the title rather than the flower directly.
