Rosalva and Rosalba are the same name, and the reason both exist is a fact about Spanish rather than about families. Spanish does not distinguish b from v: the two letters spell one sound, and which one gets written is a matter of spelling convention that ordinary speakers cannot resolve by ear.

Where it comes from

The story of Rosalva

The Italian form belonged to a painter who changed what portraiture was made of. She worked in pastel, which had been a medium for preliminary sketches, and made it a finished one — soft, immediate, flattering, and quick enough that a sitter did not have to give up weeks. Venice was full of visitors on their grand tours and she painted a great many of them; when she went to Paris the fashion followed her and half the French court sat for pastels within a decade. She was elected to the Roman academy and later to the French one, which almost no woman was, and she went blind at the end of her life.

Meaning

white rose

Two Latin words joined, the flower and the adjective for white. The compound is transparent in Italian and Spanish alike, and neither spelling of the middle consonant affects it.

Fashion outlook

Rosalva sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete, visual and instantly understood by a Spanish speaker.
  • Rosa and Alba both sit inside it as complete names.
  • The rhythm is even and the name carries well at length.
What to consider
  • Rosalba is the older spelling and the two will be used interchangeably.
  • English speakers will sound the v, which Spanish speakers do not.
  • The generation that used it in America is now elderly.
