Ronetta attaches an Italian diminutive to an English man's familiar form, which is a combination neither language produces on its own. The ending is the same one that produces operetta, and that word has a small grammatical oddity inside it.

Where it comes from

The story of Ronetta

An opera is, grammatically, a plural. The Latin word opus means a work, and its plural is opera — the works — which was used in Italian for a composition that combined several arts at once, poetry and music and staging, and the phrase was shortened to the plural noun alone. Italian then treated that plural as a singular feminine noun, gave it an Italian plural of its own, and English borrowed the result without noticing any of this. An operetta is therefore a small version of a plural, formed with a diminutive ending that Italian applies freely to nouns and names alike. The same ending turns up on this name, on a great many American women's names of the last century, and on a whole set of Italian words English has borrowed — a cigarette, a novelette, a vignette — where it always means a smaller version of the thing.

Meaning

ruler by counsel, with an Italian ending

The front is the familiar form of Ronald, from an Old Norse compound joining a word for counsel or the deciding powers to one meaning ruler. The ending is the Italian feminine diminutive, which English borrowed and detached so thoroughly that it now attaches to anything.

Pronouncing Ronetta

roh-NET-uh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle, which is where the Italian ending puts it. The doubled t is an Italian spelling requirement rather than an English one.

Ronetta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1968, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Ronetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the most comfortable rhythm English offers.
  • It is rare while being built from entirely familiar pieces.
What to consider
  • Ronetta, Ronnetta and Ronita are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The ending places the name in a particular stretch of American fashion.
  • Only the front half has a documented meaning, and the ending is decoration.
