Our story of Romie
Rome's own name has no accepted etymology, which is a striking gap given how much is known about the city. The Romulus and Remus story is transparently an explanation invented after the fact — Romulus means 'the Roman', not the other way round, and a founder named for his city is a giveaway. Serious proposals connect Roma to an Etruscan family name Rumon, to an old name for the Tiber, or to a root meaning strength. None has won. So a name that descends from Rome, as Romie may, descends from a word nobody can translate, which is the same situation as Marius, Antonius and half the Roman name stock. The greatest city of the ancient world does not know what it is called.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The meaning depends on the parent. Roman means a Roman, from the city, whose own name is unexplained — the Romulus story is a folk etymology. Jerome is Greek hieronymos, 'sacred name'. Romeo means a pilgrim to Rome, from medieval Italian. Romulus is the legendary founder. None of these can be shown for a particular bearer, and the name may also be an independent American formation on the -ie ending.
