The Hebrew road is the older one: the consonants r-w-m carry the sense of rising or being lifted up across the Hebrew Bible, and modern Israeli naming drew short, vowel-light names like Romi from that stock, which is why the name is widely given in Israel today. The European road is younger and entirely separate — nineteenth- and twentieth-century German and Dutch families clipped Rosemarie and Romana down to Romy, and the -i spelling followed. American English inherited both at once, which is part of why the name arrived here without a single fixed story. Its footing in the United States is genuinely recent: it sat on the margins of the record for a long stretch before the current rise, and the great majority of American Romis are small children rather than adults.

Neither road is a corruption of the other; they simply met at the same four letters.
