Romayne
Feminine · “Roman”

An edict once made every free man in the empire a Roman, and the word stopped naming a place. Citizenship had been a possession worth suing over; a single decree extended it to the whole free population, and after that being Roman said nothing about where anyone came from.

The story of Romayne
The motive was probably tax. The decree was issued by an emperor with an expensive army and a reputation for needing money, and the ancient historian who reports it says plainly that the point was to widen the base for the inheritance duties that only citizens paid. Whatever the reason, it ended a distinction that had structured provincial life for three centuries, and it did it in a single administrative act. Within a generation people all over the empire were carrying the emperor's family name because everyone made a citizen took the name of whoever granted it, which is why so many inscriptions from that period record the same one.
Meaning
Roman
From the Latin adjective for a person of Rome, which arrived in English through French as a given name and a surname. It described a citizen long after it had stopped describing an inhabitant, and by the time it became a name it meant something closer to belonging to a civilization than to a city.
How the name formed
- Romanus
- Romain

Pronouncing Romayne
roh-MAYN
Two syllables with the stress at the back. French gives the last syllable a nasal vowel that English has no way to write, so the spelling with a y is an attempt at a sound the language does not have.

Fashion outlook
Romayne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The meaning is transparent and can be given to a child in one word.
- Romy is a short, current form available immediately.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- Romaine is the standard spelling and is also a lettuce.
- The French sound does not survive the crossing, so the spelling promises something it cannot deliver.
