Rogene
Feminine
Rogene is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 806 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Rogene is an American name built the ordinary American way, out of a front syllable and an ending that had come loose from a longer name. The ending is worth a minute, because the same Greek root that put it there was borrowed a second time, by biologists, to name the thing that actually gets passed from a parent to a child.

Our story of Rogene
In the early twentieth century a Danish botanist needed a word for whatever it was that carried inheritance from one generation to the next. Nobody had seen one. Nobody knew what they were made of. He took the tail end of an older and clumsier term and called it a gene, from the Greek for coming into being, and the word was in every language within a generation. The same Greek root had been sitting in European names for centuries: Eugene is well-born, Eugenia likewise, and the -gene that closes this name came off those. So a name of this shape is wearing, quite by accident, the word that science chose for the machinery of family resemblance. Nothing in the record says that any of it was intended.

Not established
No source has been documented. The ending is the gene of Eugene, which is Greek for born or well-born; the front is a free syllable that American naming attached to almost anything. What a particular family meant by joining them is not recorded.

Fashion outlook
Rogene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, spelled as it sounds, and read correctly by most people on sight.
- Both halves work as short forms, which is unusual and useful.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anybody.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
- The stress lands two ways depending on the speaker and the spelling settles neither.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
