Where it comes from

Our story of Rip

Our story of Rip is a story of one short story. Washington Irving published Rip Van Winkle in 1819 — a Dutch-American villager who sleeps twenty years through the Revolution and wakes to a country that no longer knows him — and the name has carried that ever since. Dutch settlers in New York used Rip as a short form of Rutger. American families have used it outright since the nineteenth century, and its documented history is largely Irving's.

Generally a Dutch-American short form of Rutger or a nickname of unrecovered origin. Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle made it familiar. No settled etymology exists for the given name; the letters also form an English verb and a funerary abbreviation.

Rip sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2021, with 111 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Rip went to 59 boys in 2025, but Ripp is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 110, which makes it the 818th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,514 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 15,528 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 28,950 for Rip itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
