In the first branch of the Mabinogi, Rhiannon's newborn son disappears in the night and her attendants, terrified, smear her with blood and claim she killed him. Her husband does not put her aside but imposes a penance: she must sit by the mounting block at the gate, tell every arriving visitor the story, and offer to carry them on her back into the court. Most decline. She does this for years. The child turns up, having been taken by something none of them understand, and the whole thing unwinds. It is a very old story and it is unusually interested in what a false accusation does to a woman who then has to keep explaining it to strangers.
