Where it comes from

Our story of Rhetta

Greek had two kinds of r, one plain and one with a rough breathing, and Latin transliterated the second as rh. English inherited the convention wholesale, and it is remarkably consistent: rhythm, rhetoric, rhapsody, rheum, rhinoceros, rhombus, rhododendron and rhinitis are all Greek, and there is essentially no native English word that begins with rh. That makes the digraph a reliable etymological signal, which is why it looks learned, and why American naming picked it up as decoration. Rhetta and Rhett carry it without any Greek behind them, and Rhett, an American surname of Dutch and German origin, acquired it the same way. A spelling can therefore carry a claim about a word's history that is not true, and the rh is one of the few that does it consistently.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Rhetta has no established etymology. It may be a clipped form of Loretta or Henrietta with a decorative rh, or an American formation. The rh spelling in English is otherwise confined to Greek borrowings. The peak is 1895.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Etta works as a short form and is a name of its own.
  • Two syllables and six letters.
  • The rh opening is distinctive.
What to consider
  • The h is silent and will be forgotten by writers.
  • It has no documented meaning.
  • Its 1895 peak places it early in the records.
