Rebecka
Feminine
Scandinavia writes this name with a k, and it is not a modern liberty — Rebecka is the standard Swedish spelling and has been for a long time. English inherited a double c from Latin; Swedish, which has no use for that arrangement, put in the letter that actually makes the sound. The Hebrew name underneath has a meaning nobody has managed to settle.

The story of Rebecka
Rebecca is the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau, and the Genesis account gives her more agency than most: she chooses to go, she engineers the blessing, she directs the outcome. The name entered English with the Reformation and became a standard one. Sweden and Denmark spell it Rebecka and Rebekka respectively, since neither language uses cc for a k sound. American records carry the k-spelling from 1947 and it rose through the early 1990s, arriving both from Scandinavian families and from American parents who liked the look.

Not established
The Hebrew Rivkah has never been explained satisfactorily. The proposals include a word for a tie or a noose — which some read as binding, as in a marriage bond, and others as a snare — and a term for a well-fed young animal. Neither is demonstrated. Name books that print to bind, ensnare are choosing one guess and stating it as fact.

Three syllables, stress in the middle. The k spelling is said exactly as the cc is; Swedish puts a little more weight on the first syllable but the difference is small.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Rebecka went to 6 girls in 2025, but Rebecca, Rebekah and Rebeca and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,359, which makes it the 245th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,963 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,183 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Rebecka itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Armanda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rebecka's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Armanda climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Armanda's path sketches the road Rebecka is walking now.
Rebecka sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a standard Scandinavian spelling rather than an American variation.
- Becka, Reba and Bex are all available and belong to three different registers.
- The woman behind it is one of the more decisive figures in Genesis.
- Every letter makes one sound, which the standard spelling cannot claim.
- Rebecca is the standard English spelling and will be written instead constantly.
- The difference is inaudible, so the letters have to be given each time.
- Its meaning cannot honestly be stated, and the one printed everywhere is a guess.
