Rebbecca
Feminine · “possibly a tie or a knot”
Rebbecca has two doubled consonants where Rebecca has one. The cc was always there; the bb is the addition, and it leaves the name symmetrical, with a doubled letter sitting on each side of the middle vowel. It is a rare shape in English, and it makes the spelling look considered rather than accidental.

The story of Rebbecca
The strangest thing ever done with this name happened in west Wales. Between 1839 and 1843 farmers there began pulling down the tollgates that stood on roads they had to use to move lime and livestock. The raids were carried out at night by men in women's clothes; the leader of each was called Rebecca and the men following him were her daughters. The name came out of Genesis, where Rebecca is sent off with a blessing that her descendants would possess the gates of those who hated them, and the gates in question were turnpike gates. The disturbances worked. A commission was sent to find out what was going on, it reported that the complaints were justified, and Parliament consolidated the trusts and cut the tolls in 1844.

possibly a tie or a knot
Hebrew Rivqah, and the sense is genuinely unsettled. Proposals include a tie or a snare and a comparison to a well-fed animal, but none of them can be secured, and pages that state one flatly are choosing rather than reporting.

Fashion outlook
Rebbecca sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name underneath is ancient, widely recognized and carried everywhere.
- It has an unusually rich set of short forms across several generations and countries.
- The doubling gives the written name a symmetry the standard spelling lacks.
- The extra b will be corrected in writing for life, on forms and by teachers alike.
- The meaning cannot honestly be given as settled, whatever other pages say.
- It belongs to the same revival that carried the standard spelling, so it dates the same way.
