Rayyan
Masculine · “Well-watered”
Rayyan is given to both — 3,221 boys and 250 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Rayyan comes from the Arabic root for drinking one's fill — the word for land that is green because it has water. In a hadith recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, ar-Rayyan is named as a gate of Paradise through which those who fast will enter, which is why the name is familiar in Muslim families from Morocco to Malaysia. In English it lands close to Ryan, with a doubled middle that gives it a small ripple: ray-YAHN.

The story of Rayyan
The name is Arabic, and its oldest fame is religious: ar-Rayyan appears in the hadith collection of al-Bukhari, compiled in the ninth century, as the gate of Paradise set aside for those who fast in Ramadan. From Arabic it traveled with Islam into Persian, Urdu, Bengali, Malay and Indonesian naming, where it is written in several scripts and romanised several ways. It reached American birth records only in recent decades, arriving with families from South Asia, the Arab world and East Africa, which is why it shows up most strongly in New York, Texas and California. Its climb here has been steady rather than sudden, and almost entirely within living memory.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Rayyan went to 224 boys in 2025, but Rayan, Rayaan and Raiyan and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 823, which makes it the 368th most-given boys’ name of the year — 640 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 2,075 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 7,625 for Rayyan itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Fermin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rayyan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Fermin climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Fermin's path sketches the road Rayyan is walking now.
Rayyan is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Works across Arabic, Urdu, Bengali, Malay and Indonesian without translation — the same name in each, just a different script.
- Ray is an obvious, already-familiar English short form, so there is a ready everyday version at school or work.
- Carries a specific religious reference that Muslim families recognize instantly, from a ninth-century hadith collection.
- Five letters, two syllables, and the sound sequence is easy for English speakers on first hearing.
- It sits very close to Ryan in American ears, and will sometimes be heard, written or answered to as Ryan. Most bearers correct it early and then stop minding.
- The romanisation is not fixed: Rayan, Rayaan, Raiyan and Rayyan all exist for the same Arabic name. Expect to spell it aloud, and to see the doubled y quietly dropped by other people.
- Outside communities where it is already established, a Rayyan will usually be the only one in the room — which means less confusion, and more first-time explanations.
