Aden
Masculine · “little fire" by the Irish route”
Aden is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 21,854 boys against 663 girls since 1880. See Aden as a girl name
Aden is the trimmest spelling in a family of names that swept English-speaking countries — Aidan, Aiden, Ayden — and behind them all sits the old Irish Aodh, a name carried in Ireland long before the sea crossings that brought it to America. It is also, on a separate road entirely, a Somali name and the name of an ancient port on the Arabian Sea. Two syllables, both open, nothing to trip over.

The story of Aden
Aodh was a common early Irish name, and its affectionate form Aodhán traveled into English as Aidan — the spelling of the seventh-century Irish monk who founded the monastery at Lindisfarne in Northumbria. The name went quiet for centuries in English use, then came back through the Celtic revival and, much later, through American parents who liked the sound and rewrote the spelling several different ways. Aden is the shortest of those rewrites. Independently, and with no connection to Ireland at all, Aden serves Somali families as a form of Adam, and names the harbor city that gave the Gulf of Aden its name.

"little fire" by the Irish route; a form of Adam by the Somali one
Most American Adens are a respelling of Aidan, from the Irish Aodhán, a diminutive of Aodh, "fire" — so "little fire" or "fiery one". But Aden also stands on its own as the Somali form of Adam (also written Aadan), which carries the Hebrew sense of "earth" or "man", and Aden is the Arabic name of the Yemeni port city. Which reading applies depends on the family, not the spelling.

Pronouncing Aden
AY-den
Two syllables, stress on the first, the same as Aiden. Somali families using Aden as a form of Adam often say it AH-dan. English speakers say the Yemeni port the same way as the name, AY-den, which is why headlines occasionally read like a roll call.

The Irwin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aden's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Irwin climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Irwin's path sketches the road Aden is walking now.

The trade-off
- Short, fully phonetic, and pronounceable on sight by almost any English speaker.
- Instantly familiar in sound because of the wider Aidan and Aiden family, without being the spelling everyone defaults to.
- Belongs to two separate naming traditions — Irish and Somali — so it reads as a real name in more than one community.
- Traces back through Aidan to the early Irish Aodh, a line with a genuinely long record.
- Still strongly represented among teenagers and young adults, so it is a known quantity rather than a novelty.
- The spelling will need repeating for life. Aiden, Aidan, Ayden and Aden all sound identical, and the fullest spelling is the one most people reach for first.
- Your Aden may be the only one with this spelling in a class, but not the only one with this sound — the -aden and -ayden names arrived together and are still numerous among school-age children.
- Shared with the Yemeni port city, so the word turns up in news coverage. In practice this rarely amounts to more than an occasional passing remark.
