The raven is a battle bird in Old English verse. It appears with the wolf and the eagle as one of the beasts that gather where fighting is about to happen — a fixed poetic formula, repeated across the surviving poems, grim and entirely matter-of-fact. Ravin is that word with its second vowel changed, which softens the look without touching the sound.

Where it comes from

The story of Ravin

The raven had a double life in early northern Europe: a carrion bird that followed armies, and a creature of unusual intelligence associated with the god Odin, who kept two of them as informants. English took the word as a surname and, in the twentieth century, as a first name — given overwhelmingly to daughters, which is a striking reversal for a word so bound up with warfare. Ravin appears in American records from 1977 and peaked in the early 1990s.

raven

If the name is read as the bird, the Old English is hræfn and the word is ancient, shared across the Germanic languages. If it is read as a form of Raven the modern name, the same applies. There is a third possibility: Ravin resembles the Hindi Ravi, the sun, and some American families may have arrived from that direction, though the record cannot say.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ravin went to 6 girls in 2025, but Ravyn and Ravynn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 79, which makes it the 881st most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,327 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 20,345 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Ravin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The bird behind it is one of the most intelligent animals on earth and has a large literary history.
  • Five letters, two syllables, and readable on sight.
  • It works for a child of either sex, and the record shows it doing so.
What to consider
  • Raven is the standard spelling and will be written instead constantly.
  • The bird carries associations with death and battle that a child may meet in reading.
  • The change is inaudible, so the spelling has to be dictated every time.
