The story of Ramsey
Ramsey Abbey was founded in the fens in 969 and became one of the richest in England; the island it stood on was named for the wild garlic growing there. The surname came from the place, and Ramsey is separately a Scottish clan name. It entered American given-name use and appears in the registers in current use.
Meaning
wild garlic island
From the Old English hramsa, 'wild garlic' or 'ramson', and eg, 'island' or 'dry ground in a marsh'. Ramsey in Huntingdonshire sat on higher ground in the fens. Both elements are ordinary and the compound is transparent and undisputed.

The Heyward test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ramsey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Heyward climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Heyward's path sketches the road Ramsey is walking now.
