The story of Heyward
One man of this spelling put his name on the Declaration of Independence and paid for it in full. A South Carolina planter and judge, he was captured when Charleston fell, held for the best part of a year in a fortress in Florida with other signers, and came home to find his estate stripped and his wife dead. He served afterwards as a circuit judge and helped found an agricultural society. It is a fairly typical story for the southern signers, who were far more exposed than the northern ones: the war reached their houses, and several of them ended it considerably poorer than they began.
