The story of Ramonita
Of the saints who carried Ramón, the one tied most closely to birth is Ramón Nonato, Raymond Nonnatus, a thirteenth-century Catalan friar of the Mercedarian order. His surname is Latin non natus, not born: in the story told of him, he was delivered after his mother had died in labor. That story made him the patron of childbirth and midwives, and the midwives' house in the British television series Call the Midwife is called Nonnatus House after him. Ramona grew from Ramón as its feminine, and Ramonita from Ramona as the form a family says at home.

Ramonita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A real Spanish pet form with a full name, Ramona, standing behind it for formal use.
- Tied through Ramón Nonato to the patron saint of childbirth, a story that suits a birth announcement.
- Spelled exactly as it sounds in Spanish, so Spanish speakers never have to ask.
- Spanish speakers hear an affectionate diminutive, the way English speakers hear Annie or Katie, and some families register the full Ramona and keep Ramonita for home.
- English speakers tend to stress the first syllable; the right sound may need saying once at each new school, and after that it sticks.
