The story of Ram
Rama is the hero of the Ramayana, exiled for fourteen years and made to win his wife back from Lanka, and one of the most-invoked names in India — Gandhi's last word is said to have been Ram. A separate Hebrew Ram appears in David's genealogy. The name is in current American use.
Meaning
pleasing, charming; dark
From the Sanskrit rama, 'pleasing' or 'delightful', with a secondary sense of 'dark'. The Ramayana's hero carries it. A separate Hebrew Ram means 'exalted' and appears in Ruth's genealogy. Both are documented and unrelated.

About 1 boy in 25,880 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 34,859 for Ram itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Talib test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ram's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Talib climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Talib's path sketches the road Ram is walking now.
Ram sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- That the Ramayana's hero carries it is a first-rate anchor.
- The pleasing meaning is transparent and warm.
- One syllable, clean, and never mispronounced.
- It is an ordinary English noun for a male sheep.
- It names a major deity, which some families will weigh.
- It is very short and can be swallowed by a long surname.
