Raechel

Feminine · “ewe”

rare

The two commonest respellings of Rachel do the same thing on opposite sides of the same letter. Rachael puts the a and the e after the ch. Raechel puts them before it. Neither adds a sound, both are trying to give an old plain name a little more surface, and they end up as mirror images of each other.

Where it comes from

The story of Raechel

Rachel is the only one of the four matriarchs who is not buried with the rest. Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob and Leah are all laid in the same cave at Hebron; Rachel died on the road near Bethlehem and was buried where she fell, with a pillar set over the grave. The text says so explicitly and gives the reason as simply that she died on the way. That single detail is why her tomb sits on its own outside the family plot and became a place people travel to in its own right, and it gives her a separate standing in the tradition that none of the others has. She is the one who is met on a journey rather than visited at home.

Meaning

ewe

Hebrew, and unusually concrete for a name of its age: the word means a female sheep. Pastoral names of this kind are common in the same book, and the sense has never been seriously disputed.

Fashion outlook

Raechel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling brings Rae to the surface as an obvious short form.
  • The name underneath is ancient, universally recognized and carried everywhere.
  • The meaning is concrete and gentle rather than abstract.
What to consider
  • Rachel and Rachael are both standard, and this third spelling is corrected constantly.
  • The extra letter is silent, so the effort is spent entirely on paper.
  • The name is closely tied to the decades in which the respellings flourished.
