The story of Rachelle
Rachel is one of the matriarchs of Genesis, and the story of Jacob working fourteen years for her is among the best known in the book. The name reached English through the Bible and was used steadily from the Reformation. Rachelle is a twentieth-century American respelling that gives it a French look — the same instinct that produced Michelle and Danielle — and it peaked in the mid-1970s.
Meaning

From the Hebrew rachel, 'ewe' — a female sheep. The Genesis account introduces Rachel at a well, watering her father's flock, which the text treats as the natural place to meet her. Names drawn from livestock were ordinary in the ancient Near East.
