Providence
Feminine · “foresight”

The story of Providence
English Puritans and the Nonconformists after them gave abstract nouns as names, on the principle that a child should carry a thing worth having rather than a saint they did not believe in. Faith, Hope, Charity, Patience, Prudence, Mercy, Temperance, Constance and Comfort all come from that practice, and so do stranger ones now gone: Thankful, Increase, Preserved, Waitstill, Silence. Providence is one of the rarer survivors. It is also, uniquely among them, a city — Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636 after Massachusetts expelled him, and named it in thanks. The colony he built there was the first in America to separate church and state entirely.
Meaning
foresight; care exercised in advance
Latin providentia, from pro, ahead, and videre, to see — literally seeing in advance. The same root gives provide, prudent and provision. In religious use it means the care God is held to exercise over the world, which is the sense the name carries.

The trade-off
- A fully documented Latin meaning that anyone can look up in a dictionary.
- It belongs to a real and identifiable naming tradition rather than to a fashion.
- There is a city of the same name with a founding story attached to it.
- Three syllables and an abstract noun make a formal name, and formality is hard to shed.
- It carries an explicit religious meaning, which is the point for some families and not for others.
- There is no obvious short form in common use, so one will have to be invented at home.
