Prisha
Feminine
Prisha is one of the newer names to come out of India, carried west within a single generation — it reached American birth records only in this century, and its wave here is still rising. Two syllables, no silent letters, the same soft -sha ending that Aisha and Trisha share. In the United States it clusters where Indian-American communities are largest, in California, Texas and New Jersey.
How old is the name Prisha?
Prisha first appears in US birth records in 2001 — 24 years ago. The typical Prisha is a kid of about 8 — this name's wave is very recent. About 3,000 people named Prisha are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Prisha
Prisha belongs to a large family of short, vowel-light girls' names that became fashionable across India from roughly the 1990s onward — names built from familiar Sanskrit sound material rather than lifted whole from scripture. It spread quickly in Hindi-, Gujarati- and Marathi-speaking families, and traveled with them: the name turns up today in Indian communities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. Its arrival on American records is recent enough that almost everyone carrying it here is still a child or a young adult. The concentration in a handful of states with long-established Indian-American populations tells that migration story quite plainly.

Usually glossed as "beloved" or "gift of God"
Two readings circulate widely among Indian families and naming lists: "beloved, dear", which links it to the Sanskrit word priya of the same sense, and "gift of God". Prisha is not attested as a name in classical Sanskrit literature, so neither reading rests on an ancient text — it is a modern name whose sense has been given to it rather than inherited.† Both are in genuine use, and neither has pushed the other out.†(That is the honest position, not a flaw: many living names work exactly this way.)
Pronouncing Prisha
PREE-shuh
Two syllables, stress on the first. In Hindi the opening vowel is shorter — closer to PRI-shaa — and many families use both versions without minding. Nothing in the spelling traps an English reader, though some will need to hear it once before they trust their guess.

The Ilana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Prisha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ilana climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ilana's path sketches the road Prisha is walking now.
Prisha is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Short, two syllables, and spelled the way it sounds — most English speakers get it right on a first reading.
- Works in both English and Indian-language settings without changing form, which matters in a family that speaks more than one.
- Has a natural short form in Pri, already in everyday use.
- No English word or common name it collides with awkwardly.
- The meaning is not settled. If a definite translation matters to you — something you can point to in a dictionary — this name will not give you one, though it has two well-established popular readings.
- Ear-confusion with Trisha, Prisha and Priya is likely, especially over the phone or in a noisy classroom. Spelling it out will become routine.
- It is uncommon enough here that a Prisha will probably not meet another one at school. That means no surname initial in class, and also that she will introduce the name more often than she hears it.
- The name is young. There are very few adult Prishas in the United States yet, so there is no generation of grown bearers to imagine her name on — only the one she will make.
