Eliette is French through and through: an Eli- name finished with -ette, the same small affectionate ending that gave French Juliette, Odette and Ninette. The mouth does the work in three light beats, ending on a bright stressed syllable. It has been in use in France for generations, and has only lately begun appearing in American records — most of the girls carrying it here are still small.

Where it comes from

The story of Eliette

The -ette ending is one of the most productive in French naming: attach it to a name and you get an affectionate, diminutive version, which is how Juliette came from Julie and Odette from Oda. Eliette follows that pattern from Élie, the French form of Elijah, a biblical name that reached French through Greek Elias and Latin. In France the name was in ordinary use through the twentieth century, and it belongs to the same wave of -ette names that spread across the francophone world. Its arrival in American records is much more recent, and the trend is upward rather than nostalgic.

Meaningscholars disagree

'My God is Yahweh', through the French Élie — or simply an Eli- name plus the French ending -ette

The most straightforward reading takes Eliette as a feminine diminutive of Élie, the French form of Elijah, from Hebrew Eliyahu, 'my God is Yahweh'. Others treat it as a French -ette formation on any of the Eli- names, Éliane and Élisabeth among them, in which case the Hebrew sense arrives second-hand. Both readings land in the same family; they disagree about which door it came through.

Pronouncing Eliette

ee-lee-ET

Three syllables with the stress on the last. Some American families say eh-lee-ET, and the French pronunciation is closer to ay-lyET, with the first two syllables run together. Because the name is still uncommon here, none of these has become the assumed default, so expect to supply it.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Eliette went to 181 girls in 2025, but Elliette is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 261, which makes it the 704th most-given girls’ name of the year — 537 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,158 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 8,880 for Eliette itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Built on a French pattern with well-known company — Juliette, Odette, Colette — so the shape of it is already familiar to English speakers.
  • Comes with short forms people already know how to spell and say: Ellie, Elle, Etta.
  • Belongs to the long-documented Elijah/Élie family, giving it roots well beyond its recent American appearance.
  • Rare enough in the US that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom, while never sounding invented.
  • Works in French and English without respelling, apart from the optional accent.
What to consider
  • It will be spelled for people, often. Elliette, Eliett, Eliete and Elliot all lie within easy reach of someone hearing it once, and Ellie is common enough that some listeners will assume that is the whole name.
  • Stress is the other stumbling block: the name wants the accent on the final syllable, and a fair number of people will try EL-ee-et first.
  • If Ellie becomes the everyday name — and it easily can — she joins a very large group of Ellies, which is worth knowing before you fall for the rarity of the full form.
  • The American record for Eliette is short and recent, so there is no established generation of grown women carrying it here to point to. That cuts both ways: no fixed associations either.
