Poppy is the English name of the flower, and the word has been in the language since Old English, when it was written popæg. The story of Poppy
Poppy is a straightforward flower name: the plant first, the name second. English speakers began giving flower names to daughters in the nineteenth century, and Poppy joined Daisy, Ivy, Rose and Violet in that company. Then the flower took on a second life — after the First World War the scarlet field poppy of Flanders, made famous by the poem "In Flanders Fields," became the emblem of remembrance, sold and worn each November from the early 1920s onward. The name has stayed most at home in Britain, where it remains firmly established, and it has been climbing steadily in American use for some time now.

The Aileen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Poppy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aileen climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aileen's path sketches the road Poppy is walking now.
Poppy is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- One obvious spelling and one obvious pronunciation — most people can spell it after hearing it once, because it is also an ordinary English word.
- Well established across the English-speaking world: it charts in England, Wales and Scotland as well as the United States.
- A documented word history running back to Old English and Latin, and a place in the nineteenth-century flower-name tradition alongside Daisy and Violet.
- The remembrance poppy gives the name a widely recognized and dignified association, particularly in Britain and the Commonwealth.
- In many American families "Poppy" or "Pop-pop" is what children call a grandfather. If that is true in your family, expect some sorting-out at gatherings.
- The poppy is also the opium plant, and that connection occasionally surfaces in a joke. It rarely goes further than that, but it is there.
- The name has no long formal version to fall back on — it is a diminutive by nature, all the way through adulthood. Some parents pair it with a longer middle name for that reason.
- In the United States it is still uncommon enough that a Poppy will likely be the only one in her class; in Britain she would be one of several.
